Watch time

YouTube watch hours calculator: views and duration

Convert views and average viewing duration to hours, or find views needed for a target.

Your calculation

Hypothetical example: 1,000 views × 6 minutes / 60 = 100 hours. This is arithmetic, not a check of qualifying public hours.

Starting values are editable teaching examples, not typical rates or forecasts. Replace them with your own matching figures.

Use Save scenario to keep only these numbers and selected units in this browser. No channel details are requested or sent.

Starting examples

YouTube's Partner Program guide supplies the 4,000 valid public-hour target for one full-ad eligibility route. The starting 1,000 views and six-minute average are chosen worksheet inputs, not a sourced retention benchmark. The formula converts watched minutes to hours. Total watch time is different from the valid-hour counter in Studio Earn.

The worked examples and chosen stress tests demonstrate arithmetic. They are not representative market benchmarks. Use the matching metric basis, reporting period and units for your own figures.

YouTube watch hours calculator: calculate watch time or required views

Choose your task and duration unit. Enter average time actually watched, not the video's full length. Use views and average duration from the same selection and reporting period. In required-views mode, the duration must be above zero. The result rounds the view requirement up to a whole view.

Watch-hour formulas and worked example

Task Minutes Seconds
Find hours Views × average minutes / 60 Views × average seconds / 3,600
Find views Target hours × 60 / average minutes Target hours × 3,600 / average seconds

At a made-up six-minute average, a 4,000-hour target needs 40,000 views. This does not predict future average duration. Unknown duration is not zero duration.

Why estimated hours may not qualify

YouTube's eligibility rules distinguish valid public long-form hours from total watch time. Private, unlisted, deleted, ad-campaign and Shorts hours have exclusions. The Studio Earn counter is the eligibility check, including its rolling window.

Questions about watch hours

Is retention the same as average duration?

No. A percentage needs the matching video length before you can turn it into time. Use average view duration for the same views. If you combine videos, weight them by their views. Do not enter a guessed percent in a field for minutes.

Can this approve my channel for monetization?

No. The calculator cannot inspect your channel, valid hours, subscriber count, policy status or program review.

Decision

Use the YouTube watch hours calculator for planning calculations. Read the eligibility guide before treating that estimate as progress toward a program threshold.
